UNEXPECTED: Contemporary Artists at the APS Museum
FIND the works of three artists who use different media and genres to interpret the themes and objects in the UNDAUNTED exhibition: Winifred Lutz, Brett Keyser, and Roderick Coover. Experience their provocative site-specific art works, interactive performances, and virtual explorations in Independence National Historical Park and at the APS Museum.
The five different art works by these three artists are inspired by the work of the explorers in the UNDAUNTED exhibition. They interpret current ideas and issues about mapping, wayfinding, and sense of place.
In her Mason-Dixon Lines, Past to Present, Lutz explores three different ways to visually interpret and record a single place; her Celestial Garden/invisible sky reveals constellations used for celestial navigation that are now made inaccessible by light pollution; and Drawing Dock Creek brings to life a Philadelphia creek that became so polluted it was forced to go underground.
You Are Here, Keyser's performative expeditions—partly scripted, partly improvisational—are a contemporary riff on expeditions of early explorer-scientists. In Outside/Inside, Roderick Coover serves as the "expedition artist" for Keyser, just as Titian Ramsay Peale served as zoologist and artist on the U.S. Exploring Expedition. The resulting video journeys, embedded in an interactive digital art work, join Keyser's explorations of the Park in providing a reflection on how time and history change the way we know a place.
